Observation details
The gull was seen flying against the strong SW wind towards Lana'i Lookout area. Since it was in an area where the Red-tailed Tropicbirds are seen in season, I was able to appreciate the gull's large size, overall paleness (from white to off-white to pale brown), and the black tip of the bill. Observations from and photographs taken at Lanai Lookout revealed dark eyes, pink bill and feet. It all pointed to a first winter Glaucous Gull. The first photo shows the Glaucous Gull with 7 Ruddy Turnstones foraging in the foreground. The size difference is striking.
