Large, dark-backed gull slightly larger than nearby Herring Gulls, with dark gray wings with broad tertian crescent and broad white trailing edge to upper wing in flight. Bill was pale yellow and was fairly large, but with parallel edges with minimal gonydeal bulge. Bill had a red spot. Head and underparts were white, but head and neck had prominent brownish "wash" and eye had dark wash around it. Chest was deep. Legs were bright pink. P10 on each wing had a long, white terminal mirror. P 7, 8 and 9 had white apical spots and dark gray tongues with short white mirrors. Multiple diagnostic photos.
