Observation details
Foraging in gray pines and valley oaks, all singles. One frequently flicked its wings and tail, while the others were relatively sedate. Small size; small, round white eyering; more grayish head and breast than Pacific-slope; less greenish/yellowish overall (with grayish underparts having barely a yellow tinge on the belly) than Pacific-slope; dark mandible on short, narrow, straight-sided bill; long primary projection. Three birds were calling, giving a Long-billed Dowitcher-like “peep” call (one called twice, one three times, one many times). Photos of two individuals are included here.
