Observation details
Solitary Gull. Watched closely for 30 mins. Dark rain clouds around. Light wasn't the best. Gull was Sleeping/resting tucked in most of the time.As shown in bottom photo. Then looking around. Finally standing up. Might be sick. Not actively feeding like nearby gulls. Hunkered down on leeward side of dune out of 10 mph winds, gusts to 15. Hood incomplete /spotty like coming into first summer plumage. Bill very dark blackish red bill with black tip. Legs dark blackish red. Pale gray wings similar to Cal Gull. Did not vocalize. Roused itself when wind came up preceding a rain cloud. Other gulls took flight. This bird just stood up and looked around like it didn’t have energy to take flight. Seen by 4 today. Seen the last two days by others. Discovered by Zak Abbey who is restoring native botanicals in the area. He used INaturalist to get an approximate ID then alerted Pereksta who confirmed. It takes a village to get rarities like this! Thanks all.
