Observation details
Ca 1355, flushed from dense graminoid cover (Scirpus microcarpus?) a few meters from me along the streambank in reach 3 - very similar in location and behavior to the sighting on 6 Apr of this year. Flew without vocalizing to a dense clump of Salix exigua and Cornus sericea along the stream (the clump was transplanted during restoration work in 2018), where it skulked mostly out of sight. Eventually glimpsed diagnostic black patch with white streaks on otherwise red-brown back. Ca 1510, about 100-150 m upstream of the diversion, I started hearing 'chak-chak' calls from a MAWR (same individual, or possibly a second one?) along the stream. It soon came out into the open near a small Alnus incana on the streambank with overhanging cover from dead Bromus inermis stalks. For the next ca 14 minutes, observed it flitting within a 10 meter stretch of creek, foraging and seeking cover in the overhanging graminoids at the water's edge. At one point, it approached within 4 meters of me, on the far (north) side of the stream. Eventually I lost sight of it as it moved downstream around a bend.
