Observation details
Female briefly seen right by my garage. Here's what I posted to facebook: "Ok, even I will admit to the ridiculousness of having photographed this Black-backed Woodpecker while standing in my driveway!!! The boys & I had just stepped out for a morning walk when I heard the bird call and land at eye level within a stone's throw of the garage. It worked a dead aspen merely 10 yards from where we often park our cars, obliging well enough for me to snap some photos and the boys to get good views through their binocs. Then off it went, because I really don't have any boreal habitat or even much conifer for that matter. Not a new yard bird as I had 3 flyby in the big irruption a couple falls ago but no doubt far more satisfying. Whatever the opposite of "nemesis" is, that's what me & BBWOs have going on."
