Observation details
Small, with white flanks/lower body, entirely dark wings (upper body when resting), some darkish on breast, diagnostic head pattern (white with dark cap, dark cheek, dark bill). Good comparison and easily distinguished from male bufflehead. See poor quality pictures. Initially located by Paul Scharf, Kyle Kittelberger Brian Bockhahn earlier in day. Mark Kosiewski and I relocated the bird first with group of ruddy ducks/bufflehead, then flying to group of shovelers/pintail. Combination of excellent scope views both sitting and in flight, seen first from the bridge looking northwest and the boat ramp later.
