Media notes
A pair of birds that, when recorded, were initially about 12 meters away and 5 meters up before the they continued up into trees about 8 meters over my head (about one-third of the way up the trees). In the second part, following additional playback, the birds were about 20 meters away and much higher (about 18-20 meters up) in the upper branches of the tall trees. These birds typically remained quite close to one another, but unlike most of the other warblers we had been seeing, this pair remained relatively high up in the trees (usually 6-10 meters up, and on occasion as high as 20+ meters near the tops of the taller trees). When the bird sang, it remained relatively motionless apart from looking around and opening its bill widely. These recordings were made following playback of #PMO-021 (I neither saw nor heard them before playback), in response to which both members of the pair initially came screaming in together and calling repeatedly, after which they worked their way up into the taller trees overhead. Their response to subsequent playback seemed to be weaker, in that they remained high in the upper branches of the trees, but they did begin singing this time. These birds were in a well-vegetated draw about three-quarters of the way from the peak down to the house at the upper edge of the coffee plantation [10° 05’ 58.3” N, 63° 48’ 43.3” W, 1480 meters – along road about 20 meters above where I made this recording], and within a known territory of this species in which one of the two birds had been banded previously (the singing bird, which I saw quite well, had a light green to grayish band on its left leg. I did not see the second bird well enough to see if it was banded). Weather conditions were the same as previous cuts – clear, calm, 69-70º F. Equipment Notes: Sennheiser powered using phantom power and with filter in flat position and attenuator off for all recordings. Nagra input set at 2 mV / Pa and low-pass filter in flat position unless noted otherwise.
