Observation details
See photos and videos. Continuing. First seen 11/3/19, banded and identified 11/11/19 by Bruce Peterjohn. Unfortunately, for many reasons, scheduling additional visits to this private site is no longer possible. Thanks again to Hank and Jennifer for their months of devotion to this bird! Two of the photos in which the bird is looking to its right are quite similar. In one, the wings that are in the process of being folded are just visible; in the other, they are not. The enlarged and cropped version of the tail is from this second photo. The relatively broad R5 (most obviously the bird's right one), as compared with the more narrow R5 of an Allen's Hummingbird, and the tiny upward-pointing notch on the inner web of R2 (the bird's left one, which is pointing almost straight down), can be seen in both these photos. (The notch is at the junction of the brownish and blackish portions of the inner web, and a bit of the white branch behind the bird is visible through it.) See Hummingbirds of North America by Sheri L. Williamson, especially pages 96 through 99. Also note that the tail feathers on on this bird are now those of an adult, no longer those of an immature. The bird is now nearly in full adult breeding plumage, with perhaps only the gorget not yet completely there.
