Observation details
Very large gull, noticeably larger than any of the many nearby juvenile or adult Herring Gulls, with a massive black bill with some fleshy color near the base and a tiny bit of fleshy color at the tip. Whitish head except for a gray oval around and behind the eye. The eye was black. Legs were pale pink. Upperparts speckled "salt & pepper" black and white. When the bird flew, the white rump was clearly visible, and most of the upper tail was white, with scattered tiny chevron marks, but a black subterminal band on the tail. The white rump and upper tail contrasted strongly with the darker colors of the scapulars. On the spread wing, there was a black secondary bar on the trailing edge of the wing, but the secondary coverts were lighter, showing the speckled black and white pattern of the mantle. The outer primaries appeared blackish or dark gray, but the five inner primaries were a bit lighter. The outer primaries were uniformly dark all the way to the tip. The inner 5 primaries showed slightly paler tongues near the primary tips. Photos taken.
