Observation details
A pair was noted on a bare spot about 1/3 of the way up a spine coming down from the ridge to the west of the road out the north end of the park about 1/2 of the way up the road to the top of the north ridge. The cock was sitting up on a small rocky prominence calling while the hen fed on the ground. He was noticeably larger than a California Quail. Both birds had straight, erect plumes. There was a vertical white stripe defining the face. The breast was gray and the belly and flanks chestnut with bold white patches on the flanks and a thin, horizontal line above. I could hear at least one more bird calling farther away to the west and had heard a bird earlier calling from the hills east of the central park.
