Observation details
Heard a single outburst, not in response to playback. At the area of the marsh well north of the bridge, where pools of water appear in the reeds just west of the trail. I considered the possibility that this might be the grunt display of a Virginia Rail, which until recent weeks has also been heard in the marsh. However, the outburst lacked the throaty quality (pig-like oink) of that species. Also, the Virginia Rail previously encountered in this marsh was consistently in the area just north of the bridge. Today's vocalization was in the area well north of the bridge where the King Rail has been encountered by myself and other birders.
