Media notes
Record shots of the first record for this species in Eritrea.
Observation details
3 individuals seen feeding along the stream. Observed for approx. 20 minutes as they fed, moving slowly downstream looking for food on shingle beaches, and in shallow water. 1 bird believed to be a juvenile/immature. Varying distances, from 10 to 5m, at which they took flight. 2 reasonably clear photos taken. First feature that was noticed to separate the birds from White Wagtail or Pied Wagtail was the very long tail. Then noticed dark flight feathers on 1 perched bird. Also noted the following features: Greyish head and mantle clearly contrasting with darker flight feathers which had white fringes. Slim dark breast band on two of the birds, but not on a third, leading me to believe it was a juvenile (although no brownish tinge). Legs seemed fairly pale, although was difficult to confirm at distance, and with strong light/shade conditions of the sun-reflecting stream water. All 3 birds making regular short sharp contact calls. This was the first confirmed record for Eritrea, documented in detail in the following paper: First records of eight bird species for Eritrea Bulletin: ABC Bulletin 17.1 March 2010 p 66-70 Author(s): Anderson, J. https://www.africanbirdclub.org/bulletins/abc-bulletin-171-march-2010/first-records-eight-bird-species-eritrea?language=en
