Observation details
Apparent F2, LESC x RNDU backcrossed with LESC The head shape looks to have RNDU influence, too eccentric for a typical LESC. The back looked darkish. Hard to truly capture in the photos, especially without a cooperative scaup next to it The eye color is not as yellow as that of a male LESC, this time of year, anyway, and the vermiculation on the side is not right for scaup either (blanched out in most photos) The best relatively objective mark is to be seen in the pics with the bird facing right. The black extends proximally, well past the nail along the cutting edge. LESC males do not show this, and the pattern of the black is odd even for a GRSC male (not that this ID is being suggested) At times, the rust neck ring for which the RNDU is named, but is so rarely observed, was visible as well
