Media notes

Recording Time:1907 (UTC -4). Temperature 6C. Habitat: mixed deciduous woods. Distance to sound source: 10-14 meters. Behavior and other notes: Male Eastern Phoebe giving simple calls while foraging using flycatching, then flight song, and then regular songs with 50% fee-b-be-bee calls. The flight display started after the simple vocalizations increased in frequency and pitch. From a perch high in a deciduous tree, he took off and did one circuit of a fully closed loop that was about 7 meters in diameter all while giving double-peaked calls and doing undulating flight. He then turned 90 degrees and continued in a mild zig zag with a fluttering flight while giving varients of the normal song types while still in flight. Perfectly alternating between fee-bee and fee-b-be-bee songs even after landing on another high perch in a deciduous tree about 13 meters from his original perch. (He started the flight display at 1:25, completed the loop at ~1:29, and then landed at ~1:33). Specific location: Latitude 39.575464, Longitude -78.056623. Elevation 156 meters. ID’d by sight and sound; ID confidence 100%. Equipment notes: Recorder HPF on at 80Hz, -12dB/octave.
