Observation details
Seen/heard at two opposite ends of the property. One way down near the southwest corner and one way up north near RCW cluster J. I was alerted to both by their sharp “peek” calls and harsh rattles. I also heard both drumming a fast paced, short segmented drum. I got an audio recording of the drumming and binoscoped photos of one of the birds. The northern one seemed to be loosely associating with a foraging family group of RCWs, or at least tolerating them in its territory. Photos aren’t great but clearly show the large hefty bill and stocky build. This species is uncommon on this property but I typically bump into a couple here every year during spring/summer when they are calling more frequently and easier to notice.
