Observation details
Conservative number by sight and sound. I heard Pygmy Nuthatches but then noticed other strong single notes. I put my bins on a perched bird on the top of a pine. It was a male crossbill - all bright red with black wings, large head and a bulky bill. It remained for at least 5 minutes, then flew down into a thicket of pines. I also heard some unusual buzzing sounds a little like Pine Siskins but not exactly. I suspect the buzzing was coming from the crossbills. The area they were located is at the south end of the ridge, just where the young pine forest starts. They were easily heard by me as I was walking along the road but I would say very good hearing is required. The recording is mainly of the short buzz sound elucidated from the cacophony of other sounds.
