Observation details
Males displaying in reed beds; tending nests; chasing females. Male Southern Red Bishops (Euplectes orix) in breeding plumage are one of Southern Africa’s most beautiful birds. Like others in the genus, male Southern Red Bishops are polygynous and highly territorial. Successful males mate with 3-8 females, and defend several nests placed in reeds from intruders. One video shows a male Red Bishop was feeding on grass seed heads on a windy day at the Coots Corner Hide in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve. The other video is a male was resting on the stem of a Phragmites rush preening, before flying off to resume patrolling his territory.
