Observation details
A single bird flew and perched vertically on a palm tree trunk. My first reaction was for the bird to be a Downy Woodpecker. This bird was larger and had a longer bill, details that were seen well as the bird was perched sideways to me. Hairy Woodpeckers favor recently burnt pine flat woods in Florida where I have seen them in the past. This site has patches of dead pines killed by a hurricane, but they are old. Another birder mentioned to me that he thought he had a HW in the area two weeks prior to this sighting. I'll post a photo of the habitat type that resembles HP habitat. The photo taken near the spot I saw this bird.
