Media notes
Audio recording (from video) of Couch's Kingbird giving "kip" calls at Sunset Park in Visalia, Tulare Co., CA, 21 Nov 2015. Second state record.
Observation details
Continuing bird. Visually, I don't think I was able to differentiate this bird from a Tropical Kingbird. The under parts were bright yellow from the upper breast through the under tail coverts, with the throat being white. The head was pale gray with a slightly darker gray broad eye line or mask through the eye. The upper parts were an olive-green color. The upper wings were dark (but not really blackish) with narrow whitish edges to the tertials, secondaries, and greater and median coverts that faded into the darker color of the wings. The tail appeared uniformly dark. The bill was rather long and heavy, at least compared to my impression of a Cassin's or Western Kingbird. What was distinctive about this bird was it vocalizations. It gave both the diagnostic wheezy "breeer" call and "kip" calls that distinguish it from Tropical Kingbird. Video of bird giving "breeer" call:
