Observation details
*Rare; about the 5th or 6th for Cape May County; present at private residence since at least October 24 (maybe 23?). Tiny hummer with proportionally large head, short bill, and short tail; broad primaries projecting slightly beyond tail when perched. Green above, pale below; throat lightly stippled bronzy-green; flanks and breastband strongly washed buff, but belly whitish. Tail with no evident rufous; r1-2 green based and black tipped; r3-5 with small, medium, and large white tips, respectively. Fresh plumage with pale fringed upperparts indicates immature, and light stippling on throat suggests female; no evident primary molt. Lacked characteristic white 'lip' often present on Calliopes (but often lacking on imm female), but face pattern still indicative of Calliope, with bold white lower eyelid, and wide white gap between dark lores and dusky cheeks. First flew in giving persistent chip calls, either singles or doubles (chit, chit, chi-dit, chi-dit, etc.); similar to Rufous but higher pitched and sharper, less muffled. Was much quieter after it settled in to feeding in garden, where it remained to feed and perch for about 10-15 minutes before flying off. Only fed on flowers, never feeders. Notes added Dec 1: According to Kathy Flynn, the bird was last seen at 7:00 am on Nov. 24.
