Observation details
Photos and report by Chris Cook. "Hi Kantori birders -- It was just after 0600 when I arrived at the Lesser Snow Goose site near Kita-Senju this morning, and I had a shock: Not one Lesser Snow Goose in sight! I knew I was in the right place because half a dozen cameramen were already in position. There was nothing to do but wait, so I sat on the steps by the baseball practice area and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited and . . . Nearby a man was sitting on the grass, also waiting, and I asked him what the situation was with the birds. I assumed they would have been there when I arrived; I didn't realise that they roosted someplace else and used the baseball field as their feeding site. He didn't say the birds would arrive at a certain time (as if they would!) but as we were finishing our conversation he said "mamonaku" -- and as I turned round to walk away, in flew three Lesser Snow Geese! By now there were about a dozen photographers there, and as the geese landed in a grassy area and started feeding, so all the photographers carried their cameras and tripods and walked towards where the birds were. The birds, all juveniles, were definitely not worried about the people nearby, and carried on feeding and preening, occasionally stopping to put their heads up and have a look around to make sure everything was OK. One time they took off and landed in the Arakawa River, but soon they swam back and then came back to the same place as before. I was sitting in the grass nearby, and the three of them just came within about three metres of me! Luckily, today, I had Yann's Cool Canon Camera (after eventually being able to track down and buy a battery charger for it) so I was able to get some close-up photos -- and in focus, too! "
