Mostly double smacks
Observation details
Found continuing bird at 0730 in the interior thick dark vegetation on island (33.70471,-118.00246), calling with loud single and mostly double chips, close in sound to OCWA from a distance but louder and harsher up close. Very small wren (much smaller and darker than nearby House Wren), first impression is a rich dark reddish-brown ball with a very short erect tail. Light supercilium and chin was lighter compared to dark breast breast. Light barring on wings with increasing contrast toward primaries. Dark barred flanks without much contrast. Remained mostly hidden in dark recesses of thick underbrush. I observed a Winter Wren (silent) in Tulsa 5 days ago and find this Pacific to have a more reddish appearance in similar overcast lighting under a forest canopy.
