Observation details
Observed at private residence in Point Loma residential neighborhood where visiting water drip and seed feeder. Female or immature male with rich rufescent brown coloration. Per HBW Vol. 16 (2011), and Howell & Webb (1995), rich rufescent coloration typical of northwestern form "dickeyae". Small in size. Small primary projection giving shorter rounded wing appearance, strongly decurved culmen, curvature about the commissure, as well as complete absence of underpart streaking, distinguishes this species from Indigo Bunting. If accepted by the CBRC I believe this constitutes the 6th record of this species in California, following most recent records found in Los Angeles County (2014) and San Bernadino County (2012).
