Observation details
Adult CAGU observed well at rest and in flight in direct comparison with RBGU and HERG. Overall size slightly larger than nearby RBGU and noticeably smaller than nearby HERG, with a proportionately longer wingtip projection than both species. On the perched bird, the parallel-edged, yellow bill had a red gonydeal spot and a broken, black bill ring. The white head was rounded, in comparison with nearby species and showed little to no streaking. Eye color appeared dark. The mantle and upperwing color was darker gray than nearby RBGU and HERG. Large white primary spots were observed on the folded wingtips and the underparts were all white. On the spread wing from above, the medium gray wing color contrasted strongly with the white trailing edge and the wingtips showed a larger black area than same-age RBGU or HERG. The pattern and increased amount of white in the primary tips suggest the interior subspecies L. c. albertaensis. The underwing in flight appeared two-toned. Diagnostic field marks backed up with poor digiscope shots (including the spread wing!).
