Media notes
The bright, rufous coloring and the bi-colored bill were the clues that helped me ID this lovely little sparrow.
Observation details
On a previous outing, a week or more earlier, I had noticed this bird hanging out with the Gold Crowned Sparrows, but the light was poor and I thought it was a White Crowned. It landed nearby and watched us as if curious, and I thought perhaps it was a juvenile, especially when a Gold Crowned landed beside it, seeming protective. On this more recent outing, the light situation was better so I got some good shots and realized the smaller sparrow was something I had not seen before. It was again hanging out with the Gold Crowned Sparrows, and seemed very friendly with them as they picked through the gravel on the road.
