Observation details
Note red gape and orbital flesh (field marks of a breeding bird) but still streaked head. Do gulls undergo skin transformations before feather molt? I'm gonna hypothesize that because flesh "molt" (?) has no bearing on physical performance of birds, unlike feather molt's inhibition of flight, that birds molt flesh outside of molt periods, possibly even to save a tidbit of energy?
