Observation details
Alerted to the bird by Jerry Connolly at the Audubon Shop and given permission by the homeowner to observe the bird. Observed and photographed from within her home and later was able to invite Jack Faller to see it; and he also obtained photos. A week or so later, I bumped into a group of birders at Hammonasset and alerted them to the bird and brought them to see it. One of the group I now know is Sara Zagorski. According to eBird records, Greg Hanisek and others also saw the bird In early December and listed it as a hatch-year female Rufous Hummingbird. I was in touch with the homeowner over the coming weeks of late November and December, and I contacted Jayne Neville who is a licensed rehabber, but we could not convince the homeowner to feed protein-enriched nectar. Late in December I called the homeowner who told me that she decided that "it's too much trouble" to try and keep the nectar warm, so she simply took down the feeder. Living only a few tenths of a mile away through open woods, I had already put my feeder up and left it up for several weeks in hopes to save it, but I never saw the bird again after my last sightings with Sara and her group in early December. The poor bird probably perished for lack of nectar or insects! Entering in eBird for historical record of my sighting. I will add my poor quality photos if I can locate them.
