Eared Grebe - Kealia Pond, Maui (Oct. 16, 2009)
Observation details
Went and saw the Grebe at Kealia Pond today (Oct. 16). Figured we might as well go try for the bird and give Kealia a visit during this National Wildlife Refuge Week. Mike Nishimoto gave us a good location description as we checked in at the headquarters, if you take the dike straight out from the parking lot and then take the left branch, the bird is in the third pond. And indeed, the grebe was in the same spot it has apparently been in since it was first observed. It mostly was just swimming in place, bobbing around in the wind driven waves. The bird is overall somewhat dainty looking, and looked "wet" compared to the coots. The bill is also more slender and pointy, and the head has a little tuft. Non-breeding plumage.
