Vesper Sparrow, Michigan Bar Road, Sacramento County, California
Observation details
At least two birds; probably four or more. I had eight to ten sightings in the half hour or so I spent in the vicinity but never saw more than two at once so went with the conservative number. The birds would alternately land on the fence — often with Savannah Sparrows and sometimes Lark Sparrows — and then fly off to disappear into the pasture on either side of the road. The location was about three-quarters of a mile from Jackson Road where there's a cow pasture to the east and another barbed wire fence heading to the east. GPS coordinates according to Google Maps: 38.495682, -121.046079. Larger and grayer overall than nearby Savannah Sparrows; bold white eye ring; auricular patch bordered by white 'J' pattern; pale horn-colored bill; malar stripe; pale underparts with upper breast and flanks distinctly streaked; pink legs; white outer tail feathers evident in flight.
