Media notes
Female Type 4 Red Crossbill bringing materials to nest being constructed 2-3 ft from top of ~35-ft black spruce. This is one of many visits she made, while the male mostly perched nearby singing, as heard in background here.
Observation details
One flock of 8 feeding in tamarack. Also had a few birds within and feeding alongside the big flock of WWCR in tamarack. Best of all, however, was finding a pair NEST BUILDING in a black spruce. Female repeatedly brought sticks and other smaller materials to same spot a few feet from top of ~35-foot black spruce while male perched nearby, periodically singing. See attached video (which is also at https://youtu.be/QhFPo19sv9o). On one occasion the male brought a stick too but almost didn't seem to know what to do with it. Although we confirmed breeding of this type in Wisconsin in 2018 via stick carrying and fledged young, this is the first Type 4 NEST ever found east of the Rockies!
