Observation details
The bird found several days previously on a NE London RSPB Group walk was still present today, though elusive - it went to ground well before my arrival and wasn’t seen again until late afternoon as the Collared Doves with which it has been associating began to gather before heading off to roost. It was relocated by David Bradshaw and fortunately lingered long enough for me to catch up with it and get some images. The slightly smaller size and shorter tail were the most obvious features when viewed from below as it sat among the Collared flock in the tree-tops, but from a different angle the richly coloured, scalloped upperparts and neck patch were immediately apparent. According to the literature it seems to be the first winter record for London.
