Observation details
One group of 50 (carefully counted with hand clicker twice, both times came out as exactly 50 individuals) and a single bird in a separate impoundment. The Wilson's Phalaropes were all in several smaller groups in the first impoundment, and nearly all visible from the observation tower. The 50 Red-necked Phalaropes were in the second impoundment, but distant. I tried to walk into the area to get closer view but mangrove scrub obscured my view. First saw them from the road, and their small size was an immediate clue. (I was expecting this species after last week's report of 35 individuals at this site.) Also observed the black mask, and the active, pirouetting behavior. Some (juveniles) were darker than others. A single bird was seen in the third impoundment, toward the shrimp farm (not photographed, but small size for a phalarope, long thin bill and black mask seen well). I tried to get closer by driving around to the backside, but the distance was about the same from that side, and I wanted to visit other sites rather than spend much time getting better photos.
