An immature Martial Eagle perching in a Marula tree. Martial Eagles (Polemaetus bellicosus) is one of the largest eagles in Africa, with females weighing up to six kilograms. Martial Eagles take a wide variety of vertebrates in the weight range of 1-5 kg – large birds, monitor lizards and mammals p to the size of small antelopes. They occur sparsely over most of sub-Saharan Africa, only avoiding tropical rainforest. This immature bird lacks the dark brown head, chest and back of an adult was perched in a Marula tree on the S28 Road in Kruger National park, avoiding the sun on a hot day. Elevation: 287 m.
