Media notes
An African Hoopoe sitting on sand. The African Hoopoe (Upupa epops africana) is very similar to the Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops epops) and is unmistakable with its erectile crest, boldly black and white-patterned wings and pinkish head and body. African Hoopoes are fairly common residents in Kruger Park and are often seen probing the soil for prey that includes insects and their larvae, earthworms, and small frogs, snakes and lizards. These birds are cavity breeders and use a range of nest sites including holes in the ground, tree holes, termite mounds and holes in stone walls. Elevation: 287 m. Date added to IBC: June 21, 2018.
