A Nankeen Kestrel perching. The Nankeen Kestrel (Falco cenchroides) is Australia’s smallest falcon and occurs widely throughout mainland Australia, mainly in open country. Nankeen Kestrels hunt a variety of prey, particularly mice and large insects such as grasshoppers, lizards and small birds. Nankeen Kestrels are consummate hoverers, remaining stationary in a stiff breeze as they survey the ground below for prey. This Kestrel was perching in a Norfolk Pine near the jetty at Jurien Bay in Western Australia. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: August 21, 2018.
