A small flock of Chilean Flamingos walking and preening in a salt lake. The Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) is a large flamingo that occurs from Ecuador to southern Chile and Argentina. They are mainly found on salt lakes and brackish lagoons as well as in estuaries and on tidal mudflats. Chilean Flamingos mainly eat microscopic algae that they filter from the saline water. Chilean Flamingos are shy – and begin walking away when they detect a threat, including a birdwatcher. Elevation: 191 m. Date added to IBC: March 3, 2019.
