Media notes
Southern Giant Petrel white morph – stretching wings and resting after feeding. Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus) are both scavengers and predators. These Petrels had killed an adult King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) before I arrived, and were making short work of the carcass as other King Penguins stood by, apparently unconcerned. This rare white morph of the Southern Giant Petrel, its head and neck covered in King Penguin blood, was stretching its wings then resting on the cobbles near the edge of a meltwater stream near the penguin carcass. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: February 11, 2019.
