A Brown (Subantarctic) Skua preening on a beach. The race of the Brown Skua known as the Subantarctic Skua (Catharacta antarctica lonnbergi) is part of a complex of skua species, and is the heaviest skua. Skuas are scavengers and predators, frequenting seabird rookeries and seal colonies, always on the lookout for food. This Skua was standing on the black volcanic sand of the beach at Whalers’ Bay, Deception Island preening at the edge of the surf. Elevation: 34 m. Date added to IBC: February 7, 2019.
