A subadult Night Heron perching on jetty pile - early morning. Black-crowned Night Herons in the Falkland Islands (Nycticorax nycticorax falklandicus) belong to a resident endemic race. They are crepuscular or nocturnal, hunting small fish or other prey in shallow ponds or along the seashore. In the Falklands, Night Herons are most easily found during the day on jetties. This subadult bird was perching on a jetty pile in the Pebble Island Settlement, basking in the early morning sun. Elevation: 27 m. Date added to IBC: February 4, 2019.
