An African Wattled Lapwing hunting on a mown road verge. The African Wattled Lapwing (Vanellus senegallus) is the largest lapwing in southern Africa. It inhabits moist short grassland and eats mainly insects. The sexes are similar – this lapwing was hunting on a mown road verge in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve and became very watchful when we stopped near it. It then relaxed a little and resumed hunting. Elevation: 1481 m. Date added to IBC: June 12, 2018.
