Gentoo Penguins on nests. Gentoo Penguins (Pygocelis papua) are the third largest penguin species. They are abundant in Antarctic seas, and also occur on the subantarctic islands. These birds were nesting at Brown Bluff on the Antarctic Peninsula. There is also an Adelie Penguin (Pygocelis adeliae) rookery there. The snow around these nests is stained pink by the pigments in the krill eaten by the birds. Elevation: 23 m. Date added to IBC: December 31, 2017.
