Barred Owl
Observation details
This owl has been seen by the neighborhood in the last 2 weeks, and has been pursued by local birders during that time. It was finally located above the bike path of Putah Creek near Putah Creek Park late this afternoon, and many were able to come see it. It flew off at 5:30 PM; it never vocalized during the time that I saw it. [Historical note-Hours after the bird was seen, it became entangled in netting over a backyard pond while trying to feed. It was captured and taken to the Cal Raptor Center on the UCD campus; Cal DFW deemed this bird a threat to Spotted Owls and ruled that it couldn't be released. It was examined and found to be a female in good condition, and the CRC was going to use her as an outreach bird. Soon after capture and rehabilitation, though, she was found dead in her cage.]
