Observation details
A juvenile / first winter White-winged Scoter was seen close to shore along the peninsula trail that is just north of the headquarters parking lot. It was black overall, with bold white secondaries (best seen when it stretched its wings, but also very evident when swimming); the nape, neck and front were a little lighter. The head was fairly flat on top, with a sloping forehead. The bill shape was consistent with a WWSC and was black in color. The head had a bold oval white patch behind the eye and extensive white lores. I was able to get good diagnostic pictures of this bird.
