Observation details
Roosting with main mixed flock. Breeding plumage. Sterna tern, very slightly smaller than nearby Common Terns. Very pale grey overall. Jet black cap. Red legs and long slender red bill with dark tip. Dark outer primaries with white inner webs, forming white strip along top of the folded wing. Uniform white tail feathers including elongated outermost retrices (cf. dark outer edge on Common Tern). Very faint pink wash to breast. Structure and combination of mentioned plumage features rule out other 'red-billed' contenders - Whiskered, Arctic, Antarctic and Common Tern (ssp. hirundo). See photos.
