Observation details
Single adult male with m/f pair of RNDU and m/f pair of WODU, associating more with RNDU pair. First looks were brief in rain, and the bird was assumed to be LESC as the default scaup. On the way out, looking again when the birds were pointed slightly more toward us, we both began to see features that supported GRSC. Photos were taken in light rain and are fairly grainy, but they seem to show a bird with placement of eyes higher up on the head, wide "jowls," and a black nail that is wider at the tip of the nail and extends to a triangular point up the bill toward the base. In about 10 minutes of viewing it, it only dove twice, so I wouldn't say it was actively foraging. Regardless, crown shape is very round and smooth, and the head shape overall is clearly not taller than it is deep.
