Observation details
In exact same area described by Debbie Segal when she observed them here four days ago on 12/26/19 (https://ebird.org/checklist/S62683997). Both birds were initially giving a "quirt" call that sounds very similar to the "churt" call that many thrushes give. They then switched to a more recognizable "whip" call and vocalized with that while I recorded their calls. I was perplexed by the "quirt" calls at first because those calls are absent from Merlin App, Sibley's app, and the regular Cornell Lab page for Whip-poor-will's sounds. After searching eBird's user-uploaded audio library, I found audio (https://ebird.org/checklist/S35001198) uploaded 8 years ago by Bill Pranty of a Whip-poor-will that he and John Hintermister and several others observed in Pasco county, Florida. It perfectly matched the sound of the Whips I heard this evening. I have very limited exposure to this bird so thank you to Bill for uploading his audio, to Rex Rowan for pointing me to some of these online resources of sounds/calls, and to Debbie Segal for finding these birds. This is the 150th bird species I've seen in Alachua County this month!
