Observation details
The bird was found a couple days ago on the CBC by a local birder who was given permission to do a count in the private neighborhood. The birder who found the bird arranged with the owner of the property for a Tammy and I to go out to see the bird. The bird was extremely skittish and difficult to get close to. It has a favorite perch in a persons backyard. We had to walk through 3 different backyards to get to the perch. There is no public access and quite a ways from public property. the fact that the bird stays with in 100 yards of the roost makes it impossible for the general public to be able to see this bird. When not on the roost it tends to hide in dense vegetation next to the one house. We did confirm this is NOT an escapee from a private collection on Sanibel. According to the owner of the private collection, he has never had a Scaly-naped pigeon. There is zero doubt this is a wild bird. Unfortunately, the neighborhood has asked to keep the location private to protect the privacy of this neighborhood since you have to stand in someone’s back yard to see the bird.
