Observation details
RARE. Adult. First observed floating down the river. Dark eye with rounded head and green/yellow parallel edged bill caught my attention initially. I then was able to obtain photos of the head/bill which show the black subterminal markings with a red gony's spot. It was smaller than surrounding herring gulls but larger than ring-billed. The darker mantle was not apparent at first. I observed it briefly in flight when I noticed the more extensive black wingtips with the long thin wings. Eventually the bird sat on the opposite bank from me and the greenish legs were noticeable. Milton Collins joined me in the observation at that point. Finally after loafing on the bank for a few minutes preening, the bird took flight where open wing photos were taken After reviewing the photos I noticed the P10 had a solid white tip, that with the overall lighter color of this bird , I'm leaning toward ssp. albertensis. If accepted by NJBRC this would be the 2nd Middlesex county record and ?6th NJ state record.
