Media notes
Guttural croak type call while perched. Recorded just west of Stoppa Lake outlet at 6:20 a.m. EDT.
Observation details
Both birds were easily seen catching hairy caterpillars, probably tent caterpillars, from the branches and trunks of tall Largetooth and Trembling Aspens. They were also foraging high in the leaf canopy. While processing a caterpillar on a bare branch, one bird would hold its wings loosely by its side while raising, holding and then lowering its tail. Unusual to see their behaviour out in the open like this. Several vocalizations were given and recorded. A few more can be heard in the REVI clip as they were in the same area along with the GRCA and AMRE. I know they carry food in their throat pouch for the young; here they were carrying food to process elsewhere and quite likely for their young, hence the 'CF' breeding code.
